You get what you pay for, sadly. As someone who has run mail servers and relays for many years - now in a much reduced amateur capacity - I have always had problems with the big free mail networks *except* gmail. Get a gmail account - and you can even pay them $5/year I think to have your own domain. I don't know why but the gmail spam rejection and blocking *and* fixing issues stuff always seemed better - from the viewpoint of external senders.

I have 2 of my own domains and server space already.
Where has my mind been? Actually though, hotmail has been the most relaible. Even over my internet provider and my own domains! I go through short spells of entering sweepstakes and winning prizes. When you win 160 prizes in 4 months, you want to make sure you get every last email notification. That's why I use the hotmail. I can get nearly 5oo emails a day sometimes. You see, I have been grandfathered into the paid hotmail services (vs free version), but for free. Been using it for decades. I like pop3. (PS so that is where candes has been... Flying to vegas for free... And enjoying wonderful prizes... Oh I am soo good at it! )
I also use live mail for all of mine and my husbands email addresses. Gmail... hotmail.. comcast etc... Then create a bajillion rules for sorting them all into folders. You should see the elaborate email set-up I have. Of course my MC forum posts go into my "important" folder.
