eyes and eyelids

Has anyone had to have their MC's eyelids operated on because they have curled inward onto the eyes and caused irritation and watering with thick mucus?

This is known as an "entropion"of the eyelids & we actually had to do the op on a cat this morning at work,he had to have both lower lids done.I haven't seen it in a MC but no doubt there could be someone on the forum who has.If its actually causing harm to the cats eyes it most probally would be better to have them done & sorted,just not a nice thought...

I have seen it on a MC before and if it isn't treated quickly it can turn very nasty.

The sooner it is sorted the better I think.

I have just had this operation done on my maine coon and although quite traumatic both for him and me he seems to be so much ahppier without the constant eye irritation. I am now wishing that i had not prevaricated and organised it for him rather sooner but it seemed such an extreme thing to do.

The main thing is that you had it done and your cat will recover well...I am sure the vet would have said if there was permanent damage.

The worst case I have seen was a dog & he had to have upper & lower lids done on both eyes,except for the first 24hrs when they look a bit like a bloodhound or should I say bloodcat it is surprising how quick the puffiness goes & everthying settles down.I always think this shows off another side of the vets work,plastic surgeon & he has to get it just right....
I have seen cases where the irritation has been so bad that it has actually caused ulcers on the corneas,I don't think any vet would give you an option if things were that bad but have to agree that it is a job well done sooner rather than later.

My Merlin started with a bad case of the flu in August last year.
The vet was very expensive BUT inexperienced. Had a follow-up after 8 days without significant improvement.

Decided to bring him to a different vet. He recovered from flu after consultation with this new vet but his right eye started becoming irritated and watery in November.

He was put on low strength antibiotic for 2 weeks as the vet thought it was a stubborn flu infection. After completion of antibiotic, I brought him back for a follow-up since I don't see any improvement with the right eye. The vet then discovered that Merlin's right lower eyelid is rolling inwards and referred me to an eye specialist who confirmed that Merlin has entropion.

The watery eye and irritation symptom stopped immediately after I brought him home from surgery. I was worried that there would be a scar but that was 7 months ago and he is as good as new! You can't even tell that he had surgery on his lower right eyelid.
