Introducing new kitten to adult dog
We are picking up our new kitten in 2 weeks. I'm getting nervous about how my dog, a black lab, will accept him. We had our previous Maine coon before the dog. We brought our lab home when he was 8 weeks and the cat was already an adult. It was a little rough at first but eventually they both got along pretty well. Now my lab is 7 years old and my cat died 3 months ago. My dog accepted my previous cat as the senior pet, but will he be OK with a new kitten?
I'm so excited... but the closer it gets to picking up the kitten the more nervous I get. I adopted my last cat as an adult. I haven't had a kitten in so long I just don't remember what it's like. I would love to hear about other people's experiences.

Whatever you do, don't let the dog eat the cat. Then you should be fine.
You shoud be fine with a lab. Hey i once did it with an akita-Chow that looked like Alf. Always wanted to eat cats at first. First she wanted to eat my grown cats. Then a new kitten at one point was totally in her mouth. (that would be my Nala). Ok so it was too soon, so we closed Nala back in my daughters bedroom for a long time. Whoops! Then after that she wanted to eat my neighbors cats. Well training her to not chew on an unknown cat was stretching it a bit.
Tell you what, she was great at herding my cats in the yard. They went near the fence, and she chased them away from it. Great dog, but liked strangers cats in the worse way.Last edited by candes; 19th December 2011 at 03:34 AM.

In the past I have never had problems introducing the two together a cat can normally hold its ground at the best of times but because they are so much alike MC's & K9's seem to accept each other quite readily. We haven't had dogs for a few years now but when daughter is home & has "custody"of her golden retriever it comes into the house & it doesn't mind about the cats & vice versa, will be able to comment a bit better later this week when our new babe meets her....! x
